From the second we saw The Rapture’s newest video we were smitten. There are layers upon layers of moments and styles packed into one little video for a fantastic song - we actually sat down and watched it a few hundred times to make sure we saw everything. In case you don’t share our ADD, we asked the guys to write a blog for us about their impressions & experiences with the video. While in transit from Japan to Nashville, bassist Mattie Safer cranked this out for you.

Yo yo yo,

This is Mattie from The Rapture.

Let me tell ya a few things about the video for “Pieces of the People We Love,” our new single.

We made the video with our friends and fellow Brooklynites Ben Dickinson and Jon Watts. This was the third video we’ve made with Ben, who also directed the videos for “Get Myself Into It” and “W.A.Y.U.H.” This being the third video of the album and the third one with Ben, we wanted to stretch and experiment a little bit. The tone of the song seemed like it demanded a bit of a switch up anyway. We wanted to make something classy.

Classy to Ben meant black and white. Classy to me meant Sammy Davis Jr. Classy to Luke meant a mirror ball suit (inspired by Freddy Mercury). The “Drop It Like It’s Hot” video was another important one. We wanted to avoid irony. Irony was enemy number one on this shoot. Bad pop-punk bands make ironic videos about blingin’. We just wanted to make something that looked beautiful and weird, and just sort of floated in space. I think the dancers really make the video.

Anyway those are me thoughts. Enjoy the video.
